The scholarship, founded in 2005, honors the values of Detroit restaurant owners Shui Kuen and Allen Chin through supporting the education aspirations of children of workers in the Asian/Pacific Islander food service industry in the U.S.

AAPI Business Suppliers Academy: New Deadline

The National Council of Asian American Business Associations has announced that it has extended the application deadline for participating in its AAPI Business Supplier Academy, which will take place Oct. 14 and 15 on the campus of UCLA.

NCAABA Academy Teaches How to Win that Contract

The National Council of Asian-American Business Associations (NCAABA), a nonprofit organization that serving Asian business organizations and chambers across the country, has announced the program and remaining scholarship slots available for its star-studded Supplier Academy to be held on the UCLA campus on October 14 & 15, 2009.

Geared toward "business and/or community leaders with proven track records of organizational and operational growth, an adequate geographic footprint, experience as 1st or 2nd Tier Suppliers and demonstrated capacity to bid on contracts," the Academy participants will have an opportunity to mingle with and learn from presenters from a host of business, academic and government organizations, from Wells argo and Disney to California Governor's Office.

Creatives Wanted: East West Magazine Cover Design Contest

This release came in from the crew at East-West, the bimonthly national publication, which "went on hiatus in early 2008" to restructure its business operations. East-West returned to online publication this summer, and will celebrate its print re-launch in October 2009. Re-Launch Cover Design Contest

Phoenix, AZ (August 12, 2009) – To celebrate a fall re-launch, East West magazine has announced the East West Exhibit, a cover design contest for the October/November issue, available nationwide on October 6. East West is welcoming submissions of original artwork interpreting the meaning of East West and the merging of cultures. The winning design will be featured on the cover, along with a profile of the winner in the magazine.

East West is the first and only lifestyle magazine with a pan-Asian American focus. Launched in 2003, the publication went on hiatus last year to retool operations. “During this time, we maintained an online presence, and realized the East West audience was anxious for the magazine’s return,” said Anita Malik, founder and editor in chief of East West. “We are excited to re-launch the magazine with a cover contest that involves our readers.”

All contest entries will be posted at EastWestMagazine.com for online voting from September 2-16, 2009. Based on online vote totals, the top five designs will be announced at the end of September. East West staff will choose the final cover from the top five, and the final decision will be made public on October 6, when East West officially returns to print.

Entrants must submit original artwork—including photography, painting, graphic design and drawing—and a signed authorization/consent form. Contest rules include:

· All entries must be original artwork created by the entrant(s) and answer the question: “What is your interpretation of East West today. What does the merging of cultures look like to you?”

· No black and white.

· Entries must be postmarked by August 31, 2009.

· Digital artwork must be 300 DPI and at least 9.25”x11.125”.

· Non-digital artwork will be accepted via mail and scanned for Web site/print use.

· Only one entry per person, team or company.

· Entries will not be returned. Any or all materials/information may be published.

· A signed entry/consent form is required for an entry to be valid.

· All entrants under the age of 18 on August 1, 2009 must have a parent/guardian signature.

STUDY: Midlife Asian Women and Physical Activity

We have been contacted by a research team at the University of Texas at Austin who, under the direction of Dr. Eun-Ok Im, is conducting an Internet study on the physical activity attitudes among diverse ethnic groups of middle-aged women (40-60 Y/O) -- especially Asian American, African American, Hispanic, and non-White Hispanic women.

The survey will begin by asking each participant a series of eligibility questions. We are looking for participants with specific characteristics. If the sampling quota for a specific group is reached, the participant will receive a message that states so. Study participants will be reimbursed with a gift certificate of 10 dollars per Internet survey, and an additional gift certificate of 50 dollars per online forum discussion (6 months).

The survey project is eMAPA, a NIH/NINR funded study (1R01NR010568-01) entitled "Ethnic Specific Midlife Women's Attitudes Toward Physical Activity". Other details from the researchers are below.

BACKGROUND

The changing racial and ethnic makeup of the U.S. will require health professionals to practice with cultural competence in areas such as promotion of physical activity, where cultural beliefs may mediate health promotion behaviors. Although the benefits of physical activity are now widely accepted, midlife women, especially ethnic minority women, have low participation rates in physical activity, and prevalence rates of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and hypertension, and all-cause mortality among ethnic minority women (that can be effectively reduced by increasing physical activity) have been reported to be much higher than those of White midlife women. A plausible reason for the low participation rate is that the women's ethnic-specific attitudes toward physical activity have rarely been incorporated into relevant interventions.

Eun-Ok Im, PhD, MPH, RN, CNS, FAAN, School of Nursing, The University of Texas at Austin and her colleagues are conducting a study to explore ethnic differences in midlife women's attitudes toward physical activity. The purpose of this study is to explore attitudes of midlife women from four ethnic groups [Hispanic, Non-Hispanic (N-H) White, N-H African Americans, and N-H Asians] toward physical activity while considering the relationships between their attitudes and their actual participation in physical activity within the ethnic-specific contexts of their daily lives. Data will be gathered via Internet survey and ethnic- specific online forums to allow for a national sample.

STUDY PARTICIPATION & ELIGIBILITY

You are eligible to participate in this study if you are a midlife women
aged 40 to 60 years old who do not have any mobility problems; who can read
and write English; who are online; and whose self-reported ethnic identity
is Hispanic, non-Hispanic (N-H) White, N-H African American, or N-H Asian.

Data will be collected through the Internet from Feb. 1, 2008 to May 31,
2011. Methods for the data collection include an Internet survey among 500
midlife women in the U.S. on the Internet and four ethnic-specific online
forum discussions among about 30 midlife women per ethnic group recruited
among the Internet survey participants.

Your involvement will consist of the following: (a) about 30 minutes are
usually needed to complete the Internet survey questionnaire; and (b) the
online forums will be conducted for 6 months, should you agree to
participate in the additional online forum discussion. Your participation is
asynchronous (you can visit the online forum site and read and post messages
at your convenience).

You will receive a gift certificate of 10 dollars for filling out the
Internet survey, and an additional gift certificate of 50 dollars for
participating in the additional online forum (only those who participate in
the additional online forum for 6 months will be provided with this
additional gift certificate). To get reimbursed for the online forums, you

JACL Announces Collegiate Leadership Program

The JACL is now accepting applications for its new JACL Collegiate Washington, D.C.
Leadership Conference to be held on June 19-22, 2009. The program, which is patterned after the JACL/OCA Washington, DC Leadership Conference, is limited to Asian American college
students who are in their freshman, sophomore or junior year in school.

The three-day program is designed to give Asian American student leaders an inside glimpse of
national policy-making arena in Washington, DC. The conference is structured to provide a broad overview of the decision-making process at the federal level including meetings with key policymakers, agency officials and advocacy organizations.

“The intent of the program is to provide student leaders with information, training and networking opportunities,” said Bill Yoshino, JACL’s Midwest Director who is coordinating the program.

“We hope this program provides the participants with additional motivation to be active and
involved at their campus and in their communities,” Yoshino added.

The conference is being funded through a grant from the UPS Foundation, which will cover
airfare, lodging and meals for 12 participants who will be selected through an application process.

Applicants must be full-time Asian Pacific American undergraduate freshman, sophomore or
junior class students attending an accredited college or university.

Release: Aratani Nikkeijin Scholarship for Japanese Americans

Keio Academy of New York is pleased to announce a new scholarship program for Japanese - American students, the ARATANI FOUNDATION NIKKEIJIN - SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship was made possible through a generous gift from Mr. George Aratani, a Japanese-American businessman and philanthropist, and the founder of the Mikasa Corporation, Kenwood Corporation, and various trading companies. In this article, I would like to relate how this scholarship was established.

The idea for the scholarship came from Mr. Aratani's personal experience as a heritage language learner. He was born in 1917 in Gardena, California and moved to Santa Maria where he completed high school. His father, a first generation nikkei*, told him to study in Japan and Mr. Aratani went to Tokyo in 1935. After 10 months, his Japanese had made such excellent progress that he entered Keio University, where he cultivated a life-long friendship with many Japanese people including the late Dr. Shinzo Koizumi, a distinguished scholar and former president of the University. When Mr. Aratani returned to California to transfer to Stanford, his father was pleased at his son's progress and exclaimed, "Oh, Nihongo ga umaku natta na (Your Japanese has improved a lot!)."

Throughout his trying experience in the concentration camp during World War II and his service in the US military, Mr. Aratani always appreciated his opportunity to study in Japan. Therefore, he has been extremely active in contributing to the social welfare of the nikkei community, the preservation and passing on of Japanese cultural heritage, and the promotion of friendship between the United States and Japan . In April 2008, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Japanese government for his contributions.

Keio Academy of New York (KANY) was established in NY State in 1990 by Keio University as its 5th affiliated high school. Our mission is to educate future leaders in the global society by emphasizing bilingual and bicultural educational curriculum. While our school traditionally attracts many students from the international Japanese business community, we are trying to diversify our students' cultural background. KANY hopes to invite the best and brightest Japanese-American students who are willing to master Japanese as their heritage language.

As the only Japanese high school in the United States, Keio Academy has been trying to reach out and contribute to local and Japanese-American communities. In this regard, we have contacted Ambassador Sakurai of the Japanese Consulate in New York as he has been actively promoting heritage language and culture study. The Ambassador expressed his support and appreciation for our plan. We think it is socially meaningful to enhance the chances for Japanese-Americans to learn their heritage language and culture. It will also diversify the student body at Keio Academy and the scholarship recipients will make a big impact on our students in favorable ways. When I met Mr. Aratani last March and told him of the scholarship plan, he was especially pleased that the opportunity is intended for high school students. I strongly hope that those Japanese-American students who wish to learn their ancestors' language and culture will become a true bridge between the United States and Japan.

Successful applicants will be admitted to Keio Academy of New York as 9th or 10th graders and their first full year of tuition and their admission fee will be waived.
